BISWANATH: The inefficient power supply in different parts of the state has been a major cause of concern at several locations of the state leading to protests against the concerned department.

The members of multiple student unions took part in a protest against the power department at Biswanath on Monday. The protesters also burnt an effigy of the State Power Minister Nandita Gorlosa, expressing their anger against the department for not being able to supply the needed power. This also led to a minor quarrel between the protestors and the law enforcement. They also engaged in shouting slogans against the minister and the Assam Government and mentioned that they have failed miserably in fulfilling their election promise of providing 24-hour electricity in the state.

The rise in temperatures in the last few days has also been an important reason causing the rise of problems for the people across the state. Some of the protesting people mentioned that the power gets disconnected after 20-25 minutes of supply, causing a lot of problems for the local people.

Similar protests took place in other parts of the state as well. Despite charging a lot, the people of some regions of the state are unable to receive uninterrupted power supply and this has been the reason for the anger of many people across the state. Recently protests were staged in the Lumding region of the state against the same problem.

Protesting against the power department, the local people of Lumding pointed out that they received power for only 3-4 hours out of 24 hours a day. The scorching heat and the lack of electric power supply had triggered the anger of the people.

And the local people took to the streets and thereafter gheraoed the local office of the power department in Lumding. A large number of enraged men and women also took to sloganeering against the power department as well as the state government for their inability to provide the service. The people also complained that the electricity bill amounts have increased drastically in recent times and the department disconnects the line even if there is a small delay in payment of the bills, but they can not ensure power supply for even half the day.
